A woman recently asked if she was wrong for making her family walk 2 miles a day to prove they could handle the responsibility of getting a dog. The family thought she was crazy – but was she? Here’s what happened:
Their Family Voted for Big Decisions
The couple had been married for years. Before they got married and had kids, she and her husband agreed that all big decisions required two yes or no votes.
The Dog Request
Her family told her they wanted a pet.” Well, our two oldest kids and my husband want a dog. I do not. I have heard too many horror stories about a family getting a pet and then the person who did not want it being stuck caring for it,” she said.
She said the family could get a dog. But she had some conditions. In her own words: “One, smaller than sixty pounds, we do not need a mastiff. Two a non-shedding dog only. None of us are allergic, I just don’t want the extra work,” she said.
They had to collect all the garbage for sixty days and put it in big garbage bags. That was a way to help them remember to feed the dog every day. Also, for sixty days, all three of them had to go on a one-mile walk twice a day. They had to use a GPS tracker to mark the route. If they missed a day, they had to begin again.
They Couldn’t Keep Up
The family couldn’t meet the conditions. The longest they made it so far was two weeks. So, they didn’t get the dog. Her parents learned about this and called her to talk.
Her Parents Thought She Was Mean
They said she was being unkind and petty, which she agreed to. But she knew they’d say that, as they usually took the side of the grandkids.
So, she found a dog walking service in her area and sent them the link. She told them that if they wanted a say in the dog’s decision, they had to set up an account with that company. That way, she could call for their help when her husband and the kids forgot to take care of the dog.
Her Parents Were Upset
Her parents didn’t like her solution. They thought she was acting badly. She agreed that they had a right to their opinion, but unless they were ready to take care of the dog, their opinion didn’t matter much.
Did She Take it Too Far?
Her husband agreed that the kids weren’t ready for a dog. But she thought he should be the one to tell the kids since he got their hopes up about the dog in the first place. Now she wondered if she was right in her decision.

Another person said. “You’re right. I’m a dog lover and don’t blame you in the least! This is what responsible parenting looks like.”
