“I Think Cancel Culture is out of Control” 18 Things Gen Z Do That Need to Stop Today

Whether they’re using technology for every single thing, speaking in alien slang, or changing their minds at the drop of a hat, Gen Z can often leave the rest of the world perplexed. Here are 18 habits of Gen Z that frequently stir up some cross-generational tension.

Constant Smartphone Use

Though they are certainly not the only generation with members guilty of this, Gen Z earnt their moniker of “digital natives” by having a tendency to constantly stare at their phone screens.

While this incessant scrolling and texting may keep them connected and updated in a fast-paced world, it tends to annoy older generations who value eye contact and face-to-face interaction.

Overuse of Slang

Just like previous generations, Gen Z has cultivated a language all of its own. Highly influenced by online communication and meme culture, it’s rich in acronyms, abbreviations, and modern phrases that often have technological origins.

Though they can admire their creativity, other generations can be left scrambling to search an urban dictionary or feeling entirely out of touch!

Cancel Culture

For those unaware, “cancel culture” refers to boycotting or shunning people that have been found to have acted or spoken unacceptably.

Holding individuals accountable for bad behavior is important, however the ease with which Gen Z “cancels” people online indicates a lack of tolerance and understanding, particularly of older and less “woke” generations.

Fast Fashion Consumption

Although they claim to have a keen interest in environmental issues, Gen Z has a seemingly contradictory penchant for the affordable prices and ever-changing trends of fast fashion. Typical for the young, they often sport the latest statement item, only to rapidly discard it for new clothing.

Job Switching

Perhaps unsurprising in our dynamic and often transient modern world, Gen Z has a reputation for changing jobs regularly, refusing to settle for workplaces that don’t keep them fulfilled and motivated.

Over-Sharing

Social media is a crucial part of the lives of Gen Zers, and many have a habit of sharing every aspect of their lives, from what they’re eating to personal relationship dramas. Older generations, typically more private and reserved, find this grating.

Likes and Followers

Gen Z’s constant need for validation from the online community has led to an unnatural fixation on gaining likes and followers. This pursuit for the approval of others, even digital strangers, is not only annoying but often perceived as detrimental to their self-esteem.

It also leads to a distorted view of social dynamics, where the quantity of ‘friends’ is the sole goal.

Overuse of Filters

Nowadays, with filters and photo editing apps becoming second nature, it’s rare to see a photo of a Gen Zer without a touch-up or filter.

While these tools are undoubtedly fun and creative, the older generation often finds the lack of authenticity off-putting, particularly in professional settings.

No Face-to-Face Communication

This is probably the one trait that irks older generations the most about Gen Z. Growing up with technology everywhere, youngsters have a tendency to avoid face-to-face communication and favor text or instant messaging instead.

“Woke” Culture

Having coined the phrase, Gen Z is appropriately dubbed the “woke” generation. This is due to their heightened political and social awareness, particularly on issues concerning race, discrimination, and political correctness.

However, a tendency to judge others based on their “wokeness” can create division and hostility, despite being born from an admirable passion for change.

Binge-Watching

Long gone are the days of waiting an entire week for the next installment of our favorite show. Today, Gen Zers can (and do) binge-watch entire seasons of shows in one sitting, a habit that older viewers often find perplexing and unorthodox.

Delivery Services

There is literally almost nothing that cannot be ordered for delivery nowadays. From meals and groceries to personal items and even people, Gen Z relies heavily on such modern services. Sure, it’s convenient, but it also promotes laziness and reduces self-reliance, particularly on key life skills like driving and cooking.

Selfies

The older generation finds Gen Z’s need to take constant selfies a baffling and slightly cringeworthy habit. Taking pictures may be a great way to capture memories, but when someone is frequently obsessed with capturing the perfect selfie, it can make them seem vain or self-absorbed.

Dependence on Technology

As our technology improves, it follows that technological reliance will increase. For the youngest generations, raised around smartphones and sat nav, using technology for everything from communication and entertainment to shopping and learning has become second nature.

Personal Brands

Gen Z members are often interested in generating their own personal brands online, which is frequently viewed as self-centered and excessive by older folks, who don’t see the value in such things.

Over-Scheduling

Gen Z tends to overschedule their lives, leaving every moment accounted for and not allocating time for boredom or unplanned activities like book reading or spontaneous adventures.

The modern world does have a lot for them to do; between school, extra-curricular activities, part-time jobs, and social engagements, their calendars are often packed.

Influencers

Gen Z’s fascination with and attachment to online influencers is something their parents and grandparents find hard to relate to. The habit, born from a modern world of video uploads, product placement, and overnight celebrities, may lead to young people making unhealthy comparisons with influencers and having unrealistic expectations about adult life.

Impatience

In our digital age of instant gratification, patience thresholds amongst young people are notably low. Because they are used to immediate responses, like fast internet speeds, and next-day deliveries, they often display frustration when waiting is required.
