A man recently learned the truth about why his boss was so keen on their company’s annual charity drive. When he connected the dots, he figured out a way to get the perfect revenge. Here’s what he had to say.
They did fundraising every year
The man started by giving context to the situation. His company ran a fundraiser every year to support an array of charities. The company had a goal of 100% participation.
It wasn’t really optional
While the man thought the process was totally anonymous and he could avoid participating, this was not the case. Anyone caught not contributing received a talking-to from management. The social pressure was so intense that everyone was more or less unofficially forced to contribute to the fundraiser.
His boss was unusually excited about it
The man couldn’t help but notice his boss acting differently. “What’s really strange is the administrator of my department at the time, who was usually very stoic and stern, became giddy about the charity campaign,” said the man. “It was weird and raised alarms.”
He wasn’t going to contribute
The man recalled one year when money was especially tight, and he decided not to participate in the company fundraiser. However, since all participation was tracked, his boss ended up asking everyone in the office if they’d donated. One thing led to another, and she made her way to his desk.
She pressured him
“She pulls a chair over to my desk with a sob story from one of the charities and how the money helps those in need,” he said. “She asked me to pull up the charity website and literally walked me through entering my contribution.” He felt cornered, so he made a donation.
She did the same the following year
The year after that, he avoided participating again. “The next year, I purposely waited until the last second to make my contribution to see if I got the same one-on-one chat with the admin lady,” the man explained. “Sure enough, here she comes with the same sob story she has memorized.”
He learned the truth
The man ended up transferring to a different department to escape that toxic culture. It ended up being a great move for him, and he also learned why his previous admin had pressured him so much about donating—admins got a bonus for 100% departmental participation in the fundraiser. This gave him an idea.
She lost out on her bonus
“I started telling everyone in my previous department about that little tidbit,” he said. “The next year, that department had one of the lowest participation efforts!” Without meeting her 100% participation goal, he knew his former admin finally lost out on her precious bonus.
He was in a better place
As the cherry on top, the man was in a much better place in his new department. He enjoyed his work and the coworkers around him now that he was free from that high-pressure environment. The best part was that he started giving willingly to charity now that he wasn’t forced to do so.
People responded to his story online
Commenters congratulated the original poster on his clever vengeance and not playing his company’s game. “It’s always baffled me that companies say things are voluntary, but then they track participation and harass people for not volunteering,” said one commenter. Another reply read, “Making you contribute pretax and probably writing everything off as a company… disgusting.”
