A man shared how he used his lottery winnings to buy property, but his parents and brother think he should have shared the money with them. He says he hasn’t done anything wrong, but his whole family hates him now. Here’s the story.
His luck came in
“I won nearly £70,000 on the lottery,” said the man. He couldn’t believe his luck. But he didn’t go crazy with the cash.
He looked for property
Instead, he wanted to get on the property ladder. The only problem was, he was living in London at the time of the win.
It was too expensive
And £70,000 won’t get you much in London. “Property is extremely expensive there,” he said. “My lottery win wouldn’t even cover a down payment.”
He shared a house
He was living in a shared house with three other people, because that’s all he could afford. He started to think he would never be a homeowner.
He moved away
Then, he decided to move out of London and find somewhere where property values were much lower. He got a remote job and bought a much more reasonably priced house in the north of England.
His dream had come true
“It’s modest, but the area is nice, and I don’t have to worry about mortgage payments,” explained the man. The man had done it. He was now a homeowner. It felt great.
His friends were happy
He received loads of congratulations and good luck messages from his friends. He didn’t get any from his family.
They wanted the money
Instead, his parents and brother were angry that he’d spent all the money on a house. They insisted he should have shared his winnings with them.
They didn’t need it
The man was shocked. They didn’t need the money. “My parents are both employed, and they are nearing retirement. They could afford to buy property if they moved out of London, but they don’t want to leave,” explained the man.
His brother was lazy
And why should he give any money to his lazy brother? “My brother lives with them and isn’t employed,” said the man. The brother lives off his parents. Nothing is preventing him from working; he just doesn’t want to.
He would have shared
The man would have split a huge lottery win with his family. “If I had won a large sum, such as millions, I would have shared.”
It just covered the house
But after buying his house, there wasn’t much left of the £70,000. Plus, he needed it for furniture and a second-hand car.
It was the start of their problems
The family was so close, but now it’s breaking apart. The parents and brother are accusing this man of turning his back on them.
He doesn’t see it like that, but now he’s wondering if he did the right thing. So he posted the lottery winning story online, asking, “Was I selfish for not sharing my lottery winnings with my family?”
The internet answered
“Absolutely not,” said one person. “Their behavior is outrageous. Why would you owe them anything from a lottery win that barely covers a modest home purchase?”
“It’s your money,” said another. “It sounds like you have a good head on your shoulders, and they are greedy and entitled. Congrats on your win and spending it wisely.”
