A woman recently wrote to an online forum about how her mother-in-law plays favorites with her nephew. However, when the mother-in-law spent all her money treating the nephew, she needed to ask the woman and her husband to buy her groceries. Here’s what she said.
The woman wrote, “I have been with my husband for six years. We have one four-year-old child together, and I have two boys as well, who are eleven and six.”
Close to the in-laws
“We bought a house for my mother-in-law right down the road so that she could be close. She lives alone and doesn’t have a car,” she added. “My husband’s 10-year-old nephew comes about every three weeks to stay the weekend with her, but it’s forced.”
The nephew is a real piece of work. He’s spoiled, he lies all the time, and he’s a real bully.
When her kids stay at her mother-in-law’s, they help out and behave well. The nephew, on the other hand, acts awfully but gets treated like a little prince.
Her nephew also gets his own room at her mother-in-law’s house. While her kids were there, the nephew told them to “get out of his room.” The woman didn’t like it.
The woman and her husband own the house; she couldn’t understand why the nephew felt it was okay to order her kids around. The mother-in-law didn’t do much to discipline the nephew, and the kids noticed her clear favoritism.
The woman spoke to her husband about the matter. He explained that was just how it is. What’s more, he said he was tired of hearing about it. He warned her that if he brought it up with his mother, it would get pretty ugly.
Her mother-in-law is on a fixed income. Over spring break, her nephew stayed at the house. She spent the whole time waiting on him and cooking lavish meals far outside her budget.
Out of cash
When the nephew went home, the mother-in-law called the woman’s husband. She told him that her groceries were depleted and she didn’t have money to buy more. However, the woman’s family is also working with a fixed budget.
Her husband gave his mother some of their grocery money. It left them short for the month. Remembering that the ungrateful nephew had been fed fat over the break made her angry. In fact, it was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
No more help
The woman used to help her mother-in-law a lot. She would mow her grass, pick up groceries, and take her to doctor appointments. However, she told her husband that she wouldn’t do any of that until the situation with the nephew was sorted out.
Was she right to put her foot down?
The woman felt the drama was straining her marriage. But she needed to take a stand. She reached out to an internet forum and asked if she was in the right.
The internet responded
One poster said, “Why can’t the nephew’s parents send grocery money when the kid visits or stays there? It shouldn’t fall on you two to pay for it.”
While another declared, “If your husband’s gotten to the point where he’s taking food out of your kid’s mouths, you’ve got a big, big problem.”
