A woman recently asked for advice after she found out her husband didn’t intend to leave their marital home to her in his will, which would leave her homeless. Here’s what happened.
There Was an Age Difference
A 47-year-old woman had been married to a 65-year-old man for 10 years. They seemed to be a happy, content couple.
He Retired and Made Plans
When the woman’s husband retired, he started talking about his will. The woman said, “My husband informed me that he’s leaving our marital home to his daughter.”
She Was Shocked
This revelation stunned the woman. She’d assumed the house would automatically go to her if she were the surviving spouse (which, given their age difference, would most likely be the case).
She Knew She’d Be Alone for Years
The woman had made peace with the fact that she’d probably be alone for many years after her husband died, but she hadn’t expected to live those years away from their marital home.
She Would Be Homeless
The woman’s main concern was that she’d have nowhere else to go and would be homeless.
Her Husband Gave His Reasons
The woman said, “My husband said that I knew the house belonged to his late wife, who inherited it from her parents, and that I couldn’t possibly expect him not to leave his house to their daughter.”
This made the woman even more mad. She told her husband he was wrong; it was their shared home, and she’d spent a lot of time and money making it look perfect.
She Expected to Be Taken Care Of
The woman also told her husband that it was his responsibility to make sure she was taken care of financially after his death, and his life insurance — of which she was the sole beneficiary — wouldn’t be enough to live on; she needed the house as well.
He Put His Foot Down
The woman’s husband refused to change his mind and insisted that the house should go to his daughter, as it’s what his late wife would have wanted.
It Got Heated
A full-blown argument erupted. The woman said it wasn’t fair that she would be left with nothing, and he said it was her fault for choosing to be a housewife and not getting a job.
She Said It Was Too Late
In response, the woman told her husband it was too late for her to get a job now, especially after not working for 10 years. And anyway, she took care of the house and kept it clean for him.
They Had Cleaners
The woman said, “He laughed at me, saying I never made any kind of financial contribution, and we hired cleaners and housekeepers for the chores. If anything, I was a drain given all the money I spent.”
Was She Wrong?
Was the woman wrong to demand her husband leave their home to her instead of his daughter, or should she have considered this years ago?
The Internet Responded
One person commented, “Is it really a marital home if you didn’t acquire the property after marriage? It sounds like it’s his late wife’s house, now his, and you never had much of a claim to it anyway.”
Another person said, “You sound like you married him solely for money and are now enraged; you aren’t going to get as much as you hoped for.”
