A frustrated mother recently asked the internet if she was right to take extreme measures to motivate her autistic adult daughter to help tidy up more around the house. Here’s what the tired mom had to say on the matter.
Trouble with Her Daughter
The 38-year-old woman had a 19-year-old daughter named Rose, who had autism. Rose had been quite challenging to deal with throughout her life. Her mother thought she was often ungrateful even though she had many good things in her life.
The woman tried to communicate with Rose, but it was tough. But she realized she might have been going about it the wrong way. Instead of directly asking Rose to do chores, the woman would drop hints, which made things tricky to pick up on.
Their Communication Issues
Their way of talking to each other wasn’t effective, and it caused problems in their relationship. “Rose is Autistic. Because of this, she has always been very difficult to communicate with, and I have tried my best over the years but it is possible I was going about it wrong,” she said.
Her Daughter’s Friend Lived With Them
Rose’s best friend, who came from a less well-off family, lived with them. Even though they had a place to stay, neither her daughter nor her friend offered to help with household chores.
They Didn’t Clean
The woman even had to hide her kitchen supplies because they were being used carelessly. Rose’s room was always untidy, even after she attempted to get her to clean up.
She Gave Her Daughter an Instruction
The woman told Rose to find a place for some of her old pageant dresses she had stored in the garage. Rose didn’t do anything with them, claiming she didn’t have space in her room. “I told her she has 2 weeks to do something with them or I will,” she warned.
Her Daughter Didn’t Follow Through
Her daughter didn’t do as she was asked, so the woman followed through on her warning and burnt the dresses! Rose was upset and accused her mom of being crazy.
Rose’s Online Reaction
Rose took her frustration online, posting negative things about her mom on Snapchat. The woman was hurt by this and didn’t expect her daughter to talk about her that way on the internet. In anger, she threw Rose’s things into storage and demanded that Rose apologize before they could speak again.
Was She Right for Burning the Clothes?
However, Rose made another negative post on Facebook, stating that she wouldn’t talk to her mom unless her mom went to therapy. So, the woman began to question her decisions. Even though her daughter’s reaction was strong, she still cared deeply for her.
The Online Community Reacted
One user commented, “You had no good reason for burning the dresses, that was solely done as a way to exercise power over your daughter. You can’t treat her that way and then expect her to not be completely fed up with you.“
Another opinionated, “Burning dresses is not okay. They could have been donated. That was just mean and spiteful. Your daughter is right. You need therapy.”
