A young woman who gave up her inheritance for a promised lump sum took her deceased father’s PC in retribution after her grandmother made her transfer her property rights but refused to pay her a cent. Here’s what she said.
Her Father Wasn’t The Best
The young woman began, “My father has been a mistreating dead-beat for my whole life until he found a well-paying job at some point when I was in Uni, and he decided to help me out with everything.”
After neglecting his parental responsibilities and leaving the woman and her mother to struggle alone, he approached the mother with an offer of a hefty sum, equivalent to a thousand dollars.
He Offered Financial Help
The money was a significant amount in the young woman’s currency, but it was intended for the young woman’s education only. The father’s only stipulation was that the young woman should remain unaware of the gesture, with her mom administering the money herself.
This was to prevent any frivolous spending by one still so young.
He Died Unexpectedly
Tragically, just three days before the pair were due to meet to hand the money over, the woman’s father passed away suddenly, leaving his financial commitments unfulfilled.
In the funeral’s aftermath, the young woman (now made aware of the promise) broached the subject with her mother. She counseled patience, thinking perhaps the shock of the sudden death had overshadowed financial matters.
They Made a Deal
A month elapsed before the woman’s paternal grandparents initiated a conversation about the promised money. They made a proposition: the young woman would renounce any claim to half of their apartment, which legally was hers due to her father’s passing, in exchange for the sum.
Despite feeling slightly suspicious, both the young woman and her mother, trusting people by nature, agreed to the deal.
They Needed The Money
The woman added, “The alarm bells were ringing all over because it was money my father specifically put away for me; there wasn’t any deal between him and my mother: he just wanted to do something for me once in a blue moon.”
Yet her worsening financial situation and the unappealing prospect of owning half an apartment that her grandparents (who didn’t like her) still lived in prompted her to agree.
They Didn’t Pay Up
Without obtaining the money first, the woman signed the property over to her grandparents and awaited the promised lump sum. Yet six months later, the woman remained empty-handed.
As time passed, the grandparents stalled, and the money was never forthcoming. Their skepticism about the young woman’s prospects in university became evident. They even suggested the money would be wasted because “she isn’t the brightest in our family.”
She Had an Idea
However, as fate would have it, the young woman found herself in a position of leverage. She recalled helping her father build a computer. This bonding experience left behind a valuable machine her father had cherished.
The grandparents, over-estimating its already significant value, wanted to sell this computer, insisting on its original price despite its age.
She Asked To Borrow It
The woman explained, “COVID started, and everyone worked from home. I get a girlfriend and a therapist who are both shocked by how calmly my mother and I have accepted defeat. They tell me that I need to put my grandparents in their place.”
Seizing the opportunity, the young woman asked to borrow the computer, using her remote work during the pandemic as a pretext. Her real intention? Subtle revenge!
Despite initial and ongoing resistance, the grandparents eventually relented, handing over the computer. When they went to collect the machine, the woman’s uncle commented that they had another larger machine in the basement.
The grandfather, more kindly than his wife, then suggested the gift of the machine to their granddaughter, considering she helped build it anyway.
She Blocked Her
Unfortunately, the grandmother’s obstinacy and money-grabbing nature prevailed, and she refused. After leaving with the PC, the young woman swiftly blocked the old woman’s number.
Her mother, soft-hearted as ever, couldn’t bring herself to do the same. When the grandma couldn’t contact her granddaughter after two weeks, she demanded the computer back from the mother, stating that their other grandchild needed it for a school project.
Her Mom Made Excuses
Having prepared for this, the woman’s mother lied and informed the older woman that her computer was still broken, meaning she still needed her father’s old machine in order to work from home.
She then reminded her ex-mother-in-law of the unused computer gathering dust in their basement.
The Gloves Were Off
The granddaughter recounted, “She blocks my grandmother after this and tells me that if there’s something I want to tell her, I can. My hands are completely untied, and my mom is done trying to find a compromise with those people.”
This marked a decisive turnaround; her mom had always been the one advocating kindness toward her father’s family and suggesting she return the PC despite their mistreatment of her.
She Told Her What She Thought
Having tolerated enough, the young woman finally called her grandmother to voice her pent-up anger. She reminded her of the unfulfilled promises, the manipulations, and the thinly veiled disdain for her mother.
The grandmother shifted all the blame onto her mother, stating that she was a poisonous influence and had turned both her son and granddaughter against her.
They Were Through
After listening to these lies, the young woman’s parting words were scathing, holding the grandmother accountable for any bad blood between family members while sparing her grandfather any blame.
Her final act was to sever ties, blocking her number, ensuring this chapter of manipulation and deceit was conclusively closed.
Was It Fair Revenge?
Finally free of her grandmother’s abusive influence, the woman felt vindicated and relieved. Her father’s old computer stayed with her, acting as a sign of her defiance and a link between her and the father she’d lost; a terrible parent, but her father nonetheless.
She shared her story online, asking others for their opinions on her actions and those of her grandmother. Was stealing a step too far? Or did she have it coming?
One poster suggested, “They can take the money they OWE you to buy a new computer. Or they can get a mortgage for their part of the apartment. Or they could use their own money if they care so much about the other granddaughter. They have lots of options.”
Another warned, “I hope you learned to be less trusting of people from this experience. The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. Remember this if they come crawling back.”
