A man living in a shared household found evidence of his female roommate’s thievery, so on the day he moved out, he stole all his belongings back from her and staged a break-in. Here’s what he had to say:
They Lived With Another Couple
In a shared living arrangement, the young college student and his girlfriend lived with a troublesome roommate who was the root cause of much of the stress and chaos in their lives.
“It was me and a roommate (both males) living in a small house. We were both dating, and our respective partners (both females) were also living with us,” the student explained.
She Didn’t Work
To be fair to everyone, the rent was split four ways. However, the roommate’s girlfriend had a young baby who also lived in the house.
The man and his girlfriend were committed students in their penultimate year of college, juggling studying with 30+ hour work weeks. The male roommate worked full-time. However, his girlfriend was unproductive, spending her days at home with her baby, smoking.
He Installed Cameras
Although the house was located in a reasonably safe neighborhood, crime was not uncommon. This prompted the man to install a comprehensive security camera system, with recordings available for a week before being automatically deleted.
Only he knew the technical intricacies of the system and could operate it effectively.
Life Was Tough
Balancing school, work, and home life became particularly challenging for the man due to the constant disturbances from the resident baby, who cried constantly, particularly at night.
In addition to the noise issues, the man and his girlfriend had concerns about their personal property, with their belongings being stolen from their cars and acts of vandalism, despite the vehicles being parked outside on their driveway.
She Was Caught Red-Handed
The man revealed, “One day, when I was going through the security cameras, I noticed our roommate and this random guy going through my girlfriend’s car and taking things from her purse. She was unlocking our cars and stealing our stuff in the driveway!”
Even when presented with this irrefutable evidence, the deceitful woman denied everything. The couple had to replace various stolen items, including licenses and credit cards.
Their Belongings Disappeared
From then on, valuable items started mysteriously disappearing from inside the house as well. The female roommate was the only one at home whenever these items went missing.
It became evident to the frustrated couple that the untrustworthy woman and her mysterious male companion from the camera footage were the culprits. Still, without interior cameras, there was no way to prove this to the police.
He Made a Discovery
After enduring these troubles for months, the exasperated pair decided to move out. On the day they were set to leave, with the female roommate absent, the man decided to check her room.
“I made sure to cut all the cameras so nothing could be traced; I ended up finding some pieces of the stolen jewelry, about $2,000 worth of cash, and my girlfriend’s missing wallet,” he recalled. With concrete evidence of theft, he became blinded by anger and a desire for justice.
They Set the Scene
Wanting to retaliate, the man wrecked the thief’s room, making it appear as though a break-in had occurred. He removed drawers, threw her clothes around, broke her lampshade, and even cluttered up the living room.
He and his partner left the house with both the front and back doors open, making it appear like a robbery had occurred.
The Police Questioned Them
That evening, the couple was summoned to the scene of the “break-in” by the police. The female thief was furious and pointed fingers at them, accusing them of robbing her.
The man smoothly navigated the situation, mentioning the high crime in the area and drawing attention to the multiple reports of theft already made at the property. He then ingeniously suggested checking the security footage.
There Was No Evidence
When the police asked the thief to show them the footage, she admitted she didn’t know how to operate the system. The man took over but feigned difficulty accessing the system; he reported no footage was recorded after he and his girlfriend left.
The police left with no leads or evidence, ruled the incident as a break-in, but the case had no suspects.
Did He Go Too Far?
With the unpleasant roommate and her accusations left behind, the couple found peace and security in their new living arrangements, grateful to have escaped their past predicament.
Curious to know what other people would think of his actions, the man posted his story online and asked fellow internet users whether they thought it was morally acceptable to steal from a thief and trick the police or if he went too far in his revenge.
The Online Community Responded
One user advised, “She got what she deserved. I’m not sure why you put up with her as long as you did. Plus, you had evidence of her going into your car; you should have pressed charges on that.”
Another reacted, “That’ll teach her! Or, actually, probably not. But at least you got some of your stuff back.”
