A woman recently asked for advice about how to deal with a pushy neighbor. The woman often parked in front of her neighbor’s house, but was she right to turn a deaf ear when her neighbor challenged her? Here’s what she had to say:
The Woman Juggled Parking Spots
“I live in a residential cul de sac in which we are fortunate to have a decent amount of street parking but also lots of cars. Twice a week, I leave the kid car (‘my’) car in the driveway and take my husband’s car to work.”
The Woman’s Husband Wasn’t Worried About His Car
Since the husband’s car was an older model, neither he nor his wife saw any issue with it being parked on the street. They preferred to keep their larger car in their own driveway.
The Street Parking Spots Weren’t Reserved
The woman stressed that parking on the street was conducted on a first-come, first-served basis. Everybody in the neighborhood seemed to understand that. Well, almost everybody.
The Woman’s Neighbor Became A Problem
“Last week I parked in a spot near where my husband usually parks, which happens to be in front of Mr. and Mrs. Smith’s home. As I got out of the car, she approached me and said her cleaners were coming. Could I please move my car?”
The Women Were At An Impasse
Both the woman and her neighbor refused to yield. The neighbor asked the woman to park in her own driveway. The woman pointed out that her driveway was full. The neighbor asked the woman to take another empty spot on the street. The woman said that wasn’t possible. The alternative spot was very overgrown. Even a small car would struggle to fit.
The Woman Lost Her Cool
The woman sensed that no solution could be found. In the end, she left her car where she had parked it in the first place and said that her husband would move it later. Although she was able to make a hasty retreat, the woman soon realized that the conflict was only just begininng.
It Was Time For A Rematch
Later that day, while the woman was out with one of her children, the neighbor approached her again. The neighbor kept asking the woman to move the car. Again, the woman brushed her off. She said that her husband would be along soon to sort things out.
Third Time Lucky?
A week after the initial skirmish, the woman parked her car in the spot again. She was worried that her neighbor might say something, and she was too tired to get into a heated argument. To minimize the risk of a clash, she walked as fast as she could away from her car.
She Wasn’t Fast Enough
The woman’s neighbor intercepted her. But when the neighbor started to speak, the woman just shouted back that she was far too tired to argue. She ignored all of the neighbor’s other attempts at conversation and made it back to her house.
Was The Woman Wrong?
The woman wondered if her behavior had been uncalled for. It was annoying that her neighbor kept challenging her, but perhaps the neighbor had a point. The woman knew that the neighbor was expecting company but took the spot anyway. And was ignoring the neighbor really the polite course of action?
People Chimed In
One person said, “Your neighbor does not own the street. Whoever gets there first has the right to the spot. The only thing you did wrong was to tell her that you would move the car. Since you backed down the first time, she kept complaining to you.”
Another person took a more nuanced approach: “This is a rough situation because you are parked right in front of her house a lot. I would be ticked off, too, even though technically street parking is for anyone.”
