A man has asked if he was in the wrong for refusing to give his brother-in-law part of what his wife had left him in her will. His brother-in-law got angry over the man deciding to keep money that, in his opinion, he wasn’t entitled to. Here’s what he had to say.
His wife passed away
The man, who is 55 years old, recently lost his 57-year-old wife to cancer after she spent a number of years battling the illness.
There was a trust
Prior to his wife’s passing, her parents died in 2017 and 2020, respectively. Both of them were in their late 80s, and all of their possessions were left in a trust that was to be divided between the man’s wife and her two siblings.
An agreement was reached
Everyone in the family settled on who would get what and what other things were sold, which was great for the man and his wife, who needed money for her treatment and care.
He was asked something
“Recently, my brother-in-law reached out and said that now that the ‘appropriately respectful’ amount of time had passed since my wife’s death, I needed to return what was left of her share of the inheritance to my brother and sister-in-law, since my wife and I had no children together,” he said.
The man politely told his brother-in-law that he had intended to give most of what he had left to charities that his wife had supported in her lifetime while also making a donation to the hospital that looked after her.
Her things were willed to him
The man’s wife specifically noted what she wanted him to have in her will. It was not as though he simply chose what to take from what his wife had inherited.
His wife left her siblings things
Her brother and sister had been left items such as her car and family heirlooms, so it was pointless to argue the will.
His brother-in-law was livid
The man’s brother-in-law was “very upset” at this, telling the man that it was family money that he wasn’t entitled to before hanging up. His sister-in-law eventually reached out to him, telling him that she needed the money more than “some charity” due to having three children.
Was he right?
The man is now conflicted over whether he acted right or not, as he feels that giving his wife’s inheritance away rather than to her siblings might be wrong.
The internet responded
One person said, “If this is true, they are not nice people. Who calls a grieving spouse and demands their money?”
Another commenter noted, “You don’t owe her siblings anything. Legally, emotionally, or financially.”
