A Man Turned His Grandmother-In-Law’s House Into A Dream Home For Himself And His Wife, But When The Grandmother Demanded The House Back, He Pruned A Whole Branch From His Family Tree

A man recently asked for advice about a cutthroat grandmother. He had renovated a house bought in the grandmother’s name, but was he right to cut her out when she took the property for herself? Here’s what he had to say:

“Three years ago, my wife and I lived in a small, fixer-upper house with a few acres of land. It needed a lot of work and was kind of a money pit, but it was cheap, so we could make do. We made every mortgage payment and made every repair,” the man explained. “The only downside was that we had bought the place in my wife’s grandmother’s name.”

When the man called the house a fixer-upper, he wasn’t exaggerating. He had to repair and rebuild parts of the property, including the back porch. The septic system needed refitting, the yard needed fencing, and the roof needed fixing.

It took the man six years to get the house all fixed up. It hadn’t been cheap, either. The man estimated that he’d spent tens of thousands of dollars on getting everything up to spec. But that was alright, because he planned to make it his forever home. There was just one problem.

“After 6 years of payments and +$100k in value added, we put in for the loan transfer, and her grandmother denied signing it over to us. She decided to keep the house and said we could ‘rent it or move’. We were out within the month.”

Less than a month after the man and his wife left the property, the grandma sold it for a $100,000 profit. She had made a fortune with little investment of her own. It was a stroke of business genius, but it threatened to tear the family apart.

The man was furious when he learned that someone else had profited from his hard work. His wife’s grandma did give him a cut of the profits: five thousand dollars. Given that he’d spent four times that on the renovation and had also given his labor, he was not impressed.

Although he felt incredibly betrayed by the grandmother’s cruel behavior, the man was willing to let bygones be bygones. He told his wife that she should go and see her grandma, even though he wanted nothing to do with the old cutthroat.

While he wanted his wife to repair her relationship with her grandmother, the man didn’t think that he could do the same. She would never be able to make up for what she’d done to him. He said that even receiving a huge sum of money from her will wouldn’t change his mind.

The Scandal Echoed Through The Whole Family

The man admitted that what had happened had left him unable to trust any of his in-laws. After all, his mother-in-law and father-in-law had power of attorney over the grandmother during the whole affair. Why hadn’t they stepped in to put things right?

The man didn’t want to have anything more to do with his in-laws than he could help. As such, he avoided going to events where he knew they would be present. But he worried that there were wider problems. Everyone else seemed willing to forgive the grandma. How could they?

The man had completely cut out one side of his family. He knew that other people struggled with their in-laws, but this was something else. He’d been betrayed, and nobody seemed to care. Didn’t he have a right to be angry?

People Couldn’t Believe What The Grandma Had Done

One person had this to say: “Grandma basically cheated you big time. Your labor and time over 6 years are worth a hell of a lot more than the $5k she gave you. Hopefully you learned to never enter into any future agreement like this without a written document prepared by a lawyer.”

Another person agreed. They said, “Look, you and your wife turned to family for help when you were struggling. You were used and taken advantage of. I don’t think that is something you or your wife should dismiss. Who hurts people they care about like that?”
